SciSys Selects Compuware OptimalJ and Model-driven Architecture to Meet the Offshore Challenge

IT solutions company chooses application development tool to increase efficiency and improve competiveness

London, 21st September 2004 - Compuware Corporation (NASDAQ: CPWR) today announced that SCISYS, a IT solutions organisation, has chosen its application development tool, OptimalJ, as part of the company's overall business strategy of adopting Model Driven Architecture (MDA). This decision will help them to minimise the impact of offshore competition, as well as to consolidate its competitive position in the UK. The tool will enable them to design and build their applications in a more efficient, faster and cost effective manner.

Steve Brignall, IT Director at SciSys, commented: "We chose Compuware OptimalJ for one simple reason - to stay ahead of the competition, both at home and abroad. With offshore outsourcing gathering pace the market for application development services has really heated up. We've always been strong in the design and architecture of applications and helping organisations align business and technical requirements, but our offshore competitors can do low level coding at a lower cost. We had to find a better way to compete and OptimalJ will enable us to do this. OptimalJ will generate a high proportion of the code for the applications we develop, which will help us drive our costs down and gain competitive advantage. Customers are starting to get excited about MDA as they realise development time and cost can be reduced without having to take on the inherent risks of offshore outsourcing."

SciSys embarked on an MDA strategy nine months ago in order to investigate its use for reducing the time and cost of application development, but also to improve consistency and flexibility. Brignall continued: "We needed to find a product that was not only MDA-based, but one that would form part of our long term business strategy. Compuware OptimalJ fitted the bill perfectly as it is standards based and removes many of the complexities associated with J2EE application development. Compuware won over other vendors due to their ability to provide first class product development and support as well as their commitment to MDA."

SciSys particularly liked OptimalJ's pattern-based approach to application development as this increases the reliability of code and thus reduces the amount of time needed to test and maintain that code. The design and implementation templates generate all the code required for running an application. It enables developers to set up pre-defined designs, enabling them to build and maintain their own patterns. They can then apply these patterns to their specific project, which significantly reduces the time it takes to develop an application, when compared to starting from scratch.

Brignall went on to say: "OptimalJ's implementation of MDA will also bring our customers cost saving in the long run. If you consider that maintenance typically accounts for over 60% of the cost of an application over its lifecycle you can understand why organisations need to find ways to reduce maintenance costs. The MDA approach increases the agility of software and therefore makes it much more cost effective for changes to be made to an application as business requirements change. Not only that but it removes a great deal of the cost and complexity of implementing technology refresh."

SciSys also commented that they liked the way OptimalJ performs the transformations from model-to model, as presentation, logic and data application models will be automatically generated once the domain model is built.

"We are delighted that SciSys has chosen OptimalJ to help them build faster and better applications for their customers. It's testament to me that the MDA approach is really gaining momentum within the IT development industry," commented Amina West, Vice President, Compuware UK and Ireland. She continued: "By taking this approach SciSys can stay close to their customers and leverage their industry knowledge; letting the tool do the job of code production. MDA and OptimalJ combined provide a structured environment that enables systems integrators to focus on their intellectual capital - a framework by which they can compete in the UK or indeed support onshore/offshore delivery approaches."
