Compuware Uniface 8.4 Delivers Advanced Service-Oriented Architecture Development Capabilities

New Version of Unified Development Environment Boosts Productivity; Eases Integration With Legacy Technology

London, UK - 19th April, 2004 - Compuware Corporation (NASDAQ: CPWR) today announced the availability of Compuware Uniface 8.4, the latest version of its proven, unified development environment for designing, building and deploying enterprise business applications. Enhancements to Compuware Uniface 8.4 extend the product's ability to support organizations implementing a service-oriented architecture (SOA) approach in order to boost productivity, ease integration efforts and maximise existing legacy investments.

Compuware Uniface's SOA approach can help customers reduce development time by shielding programmers from application complexity and allowing them to build more generic, reusable services that unite and interact with many different platforms, applications and technologies. New to Compuware Uniface 8.4 is a Web services call-out functionality that allows Compuware Uniface applications to consume Web services. Implemented through XML and SOAP, the industry standards for Web services, this new feature makes Compuware Uniface capable of both provisioning and consuming Web services for a complete SOA approach. By enabling customers to migrate to SOA, Compuware Uniface 8.4 provides a productive environment to architect and deliver enterprise applications that are cost-effective, re-usable and adaptable.

"We didn't make a conscious decision to go in the direction of SOA. It was a natural consequence of what we wanted to do," Hans Vynckier, Application Architect, Datakor. "To us, SOA is not a standard or a technique - it's quickly become a way of life. And it's a way of life to which Compuware Uniface is well-suited."

Compuware Uniface 8.4 provides development organisations with the technology, knowledge and ability to design, build, deploy and maintain high-performing scalable enterprise applications. Further enhancements to Compuware Uniface 8.4 are focused on increasing application performance and scalability and include:

  • Enhanced real-time application performance tuning: updates to Compuware Uniface 8.4's deployment monitor provide enhanced real-time application performance tuning capabilities, including access to more detailed information about the performance of deployed applications;
  • Simplified deployment and maintenance: an updated deployment utility simplifies the process of deploying and updating Compuware Uniface applications;
  • Graphical user interface updates: In response to customer demand, Compuware has expanded the number of graphical controls by including a command button, picture widget and check box as options available to Compuware Uniface developers for the construction of intuitive user interfaces;
  • Enhanced usability: Compuware Uniface 8.4 includes additional capabilities that enhance the development environment's usability by adding to the product's rich procedural code language

"Service-oriented architectures bring the promise of easy integration but this can not be at the sacrifice of performance and scalability, " said Thomas Murphy, Vice President, Research Services, META Group, Inc. "Organisations that successfully deploy composite applications will require proven standards-based integration capabilities that maintain developer productivity."

"Thousands of organisations throughout the world rely on Compuware Uniface to build their complex, mission-critical applications, and we continue to see healthy demand from our existing customer base, as well as a growing number of new customers looking for a proven tool for complex enterprise development," said Adrian Gosbell, Compuware Product Manager. "For the thousands of companies who have already made extensive investments in legacy technologies and are facing the challenge of integrating these with ever-emerging newer technology, Uniface is the glue that unites them all and provides a framework so that software is developed in the most productive way - around services rather than chunks of code."
