Mercer set to reduce operational complexity by reducing number of servers from 500 to 50

Compuware Vantage Minimises Risks of Server Consolidation Project

London, UK - 11th March, 2004 - Compuware Corporation (NASDAQ: CPWR), the software and services provider, today announced that it has won a deal to supply Mercer Human Resource Consulting, a human resources and employee benefits consultancy, with tools and services to help the organisation embark on a server consolidation project which will reduce operational complexity and support growing business demand.

Mercer Human Resource Consulting is the largest consulting firm of its type in the UK, helping organisations create business value through their people. It employs over 3,000 staff in 17 office locations in the UK.

The organisation will be using Compuware's Vantage suite of performance management tools to analyse how applications are currently working within the IT infrastructure. The data collected from this analysis will then be used to change the architecture of the IT infrastructure from 500 distributed servers to between 50 and 70 centralised servers. The project will make it easier for business processes to be re-engineered and for the infrastructure to be scaled as demand dictates.

"Our infrastructure was growing in complexity at a time where business needs were expanding. So, it made sense to take advantage of a lease renewal cycle to reduce the complexity of our operating environment and establishing a platform for growth," said Victor Fetter, Director of Information Technology at Mercer Human Resource Consulting.

Mercer has invested in new servers, SAN's and a MPLS network. Compuware's Professional Services Consultants will act as strategic business partners, working in unison with the IT team at Mercer to migrate applications from the old to the new infrastructure. Compuware's consultants and tools will model how applications will perform on the new infrastructure.

"Moving from a distributed to a consolidated infrastructure is a massive undertaking, and we needed an experienced partner. We were attracted to the fact that Compuware has carried out similar server consolidation projects for other clients," commented Mr. Fetter. "Their experience should ensure that we adopt industry best practices."

The prediction technology being used will make it easy to identify which of the applications are easiest to migrate into the new infrastructure. Application analysis tools will be used to identify which applications perform badly over the WAN and the reasons why. Compuware consultants will then work with Mercer to re-engineer or tweak these applications to ensure they perform to expected standards over the new infrastructure. The project team will also use QACenter Performance Edition from Compuware to load test the applications over the new consolidated infrastructure.
